MAY 6 Shreveport witnessed a terrible case of domestic violence last week, when a local man shot and killed his estranged wife outside the day care where her child was. But there's more, the Shreveport Times reports here: he was out on bond after trying to kill her just days before, and his brother did the same thing to his wife years ago.

MAY 6 So it's finals week at universities across the country, including UL and LSU. While much of what occurs during finals week is pretty universal (all-nighters, nervous breakdowns, excess consumption of coffee - yeah, that's it, coffee) this is bound to be unique: a kid studying naked in the LSU Library. No kidding. Posted (appropriately) on the Total Frat Move blog, it is described (again, appropriately) as an example of SnapChat finally being used for its "intended purpose."

MAY 6 An attempt by a south Baton Rouge neighborhood to secede from the city (and take some big-ticket tax entities with it) seems a little pointless now. The Advocate reports in this post that two of those cash cows, the Mall of Louisiana and Baton Rouge General Medical Center, are petitioning for annexation into the city.

RS loves the Boys as much as we do!
MAY 6 Rolling Stone posted this list of the 20 best things seen at Jazz Fest, and #14 is the Pine Leaf Boys' cover of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." There are a lot of expected things on this list (Springsteen and Clapton, duh) as well as touristy things (Miss Linda's Yakamein) and then some truly NOLA things, like a second line and Big Freedia.

Sherman: Jindal disaster continues
MAY 6 Blogger Dayne Sherman has a lot to say about the collapse of Bobby Jindal's plan to "privatize" the state charity hospital system, and none of it is complimentary. However, his big question is: What are our legislators going to do about this? That's a good question.

MAY 6 Yay for NOLA chefs! John Besh was named one of Who's Who in Food and Beverage by the James Beard Awards, and as this full list of winners reveals, last night Donald Link's PĂȘche Seafood Grill won Best New Restaurant, and Ryan Prewitt, chef at the NOLA spot, tied with NOLA's Sue Zemanick of Gautreau's for Best Chef of the South.

Aswell: don't blame the legislature
MAY 6 Blogger Tom Aswell isn't usually a defender of the august entity that is the Louisiana Legislature, but he is today. In this post, Tom's making it clear that the leges might have aided and abetted our governor in other (failed) schemes, but they didn't really ever put their stamp of approval on the hospital "privatization" plan.

Maginnis: Problem is with the method
MAY 6 As usual, the problem with Bobby Jindal's plan is not the idea, but the method he's using to implement it. Columnist John Maginnis does the best job so far of explaining what the problem was with the "privatization" scheme for the state's charity hospital system. It's about the money, he says, which does not bode well for this week's budget discussions.
