PAUL KIEU'S EXTRAORDINARY WORK AT JILLIAN'S FUNERAL
JUL 28 Here's a link to the photo gallery in the Advertiser, pictures taken by photojournalist Paul Kieu at the funeral of Jillian Johnson. It's not easy to look at; whether you knew Jillian or not. Kieu's work is beautiful and terrible. But isn't it important for us to face it, not to turn away from this into the shallow, false comfort of platitudes and cliches?

JUL 28 A man opened fire in a playground in New Orleans Sunday, wounding four people with an assault rifle, the Picayune reports here. This didn't make much of a dent in local (or state or national) news. ONE HIT WONDER VISITS LAFAYETTE
JUL 28 Sean Illing posts this commentary on the gratuitous appearance of one-hit-wonder Ted Nugent at the Grand Theater this past weekend. The right-wing media whore was in town for an outdoors show and paid a visit to the scene of last week's shooting (with media in tow, of course) to "pay respects." It was indecent, Illing writes.

JUL 28 We all remember it, being glued to the television after Katrina and watching the water rise, the people begging for help, and the feds looking for photo ops. While the politicians were talking, the U.S. Coast Guard went out and plucked those people from the roofs. This post on NOLA Defender includes the trailer for a new documentary on that aspect of the disaster, which is slated for release in the next few weeks for the 10th anniversary.
