South College extension on the move

A long-awaited extension of South College Road running southeast from Pinhook Road to Kaliste Saloom Road with a new bridge over the Vermilion River (see map below) will be before the Lafayette City-Parish Council Tuesday. An introductory ordinance declaring the project a public necessity and authorizing Lafayette Consolidated Government to obtain land from members of an extended family along the route will be considered. If approved, the ordinance will be up for final adoption on May 1.

According to internal LCG documents attached to the ordinance, the Glorioso family, who owns the largely vacant land on the extension's route, have agreed to sell the land to LCG at fair market value. Tom Carroll, public works director, indicates in a letter to Chief Administrative Officer Dee Stanley that neither designs nor right-of-way plans for the project have been completed. No word yet on an estimated price tag for the roughly half mile of roadway nor on a time line for construction.

The planned route for the extension of South College, shown in red, runs from Pinhook Road in the nortwest to Kaliste Saloom Road in the southeast through open land currently owned by the Glorioso family. The extension will include a new bridge over the Vermilion River.
