The Louisiana House of Representatives is scheduled to debate on Monday a bill that would require companies that conduct hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to disclose the chemicals used in the process. Fracking is used to fracture subterranean rock to release natural gas and oil, which is then pumped to the surface. Fracking is a common means of natural-gas extraction in the Haynesville Shale area of northwest Louisiana as well as other parts of the country. It has also been widely controversial extraction method due to fears of ground-water contamination from chemicals used in the process - chemicals that companies are currently not required to disclose - as well as possible localized earthquakes caused by the fracturing.
The bill cleared the House Natural Resources Committee 12-0 with one abstention.
