UL's ‘Louisiana Focus' wins national broadcast award

The student-produced radio show that airs Mondays on KRVS was named a national winner in the Best All-Around Radio News category of the Society of Professional Journalists' 2011 Mark of Excellence Awards. "Louisiana Focus," the UL Lafayette student-produced radio show that airs Mondays on KRVS, has earned a prestigious national award from the Society of Professional Journalists with a first-place honor for Best All-Around Radio News.

The local weekly broadcast, headed by UL communication professor Bill Davie, was among more than 4,000 entries for this year's national Mark of Excellence Awards, which recognize national winners in more than two dozen categories for outstanding collegiate work in journalism.

Davie and his students will be honored at the 2012 national Excellence in Journalism Conference set for Sept. 20-22 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla..

The student voices behind the award-winning "Louisiana Focus" submission, which covered topics such as seafood safety concerns following the BP spill and Grammy-winner Chubby Carrier's "rags to riches" story, are Gabrielle Boutte and Cory Melancon.
