The state Senate Labor & Industrial Relations Committee is set to consider on Thursday a bill that would protect lesbian and gay state employees from being fired due to their sexual orientation. Employment by the state is at-will; a state employee can be fired for any reason not covered by state or federal law. Senate Bill 100 by Sen. Ed Murray, a New Orleans Democrat, wouldn't change that, but it would expand the list of personal characteristics that are protected against discrimination, adding sexual orientation/gender identity to a list of protected characteristics that currently comprises race, religion, national ancestry, age, sex and disability.
