Movies are selected by the Downtown Lafayette board and staff, but believe it or not, there is a scientific method of sorts involved.
A couple of brothers find a map and set out on a quest to find the riches it leads to in order to save their home that they and their family are preparing to leave.
If it sounds like a movie, well, it is and it's called Goonies and it can be seen Saturday as part of Downtown Lafayette's Movies in the Parc series at Parc International at Garfield and Polk streets.
Gates open at 6:30 p.m.; admission is $2 and free for children 5 years and under.
Movies are selected by the Downtown Lafayette Unlimited board and staff, but believe it or not, there is a scientific method of sorts involved.
"A lot of it is heavily determined by other cities around the country that do similar events - other movies in public spaces - and they report how different movie titles succeed," says Kate Durio, marketing and communications manger at DLU, noting that input comes from Austin and Washington, D.C., and other cities. "We find out what worked and what didn't work, what people came out for."
DLU also keeps track of how the movies fare, too, and shares its info with other cities.
"There is a science to it with all the factors we take into account," says Durio.
Durio says that in the past couple of years, Movies in the Parc was "more of a family-oriented event with kids' movies and things like that," she says. But recent data indicates a slight shift in the flicks shown. "This year, we kind of determined that these kind of more 'cult classic' movies area the way to go."
"We do it because we want to have an event that families can come to and enjoy the parks," says Durio. "We also want to showcase the variety of things you can do in the parks."
Parking is available at Parc-Auto du Centreville at Polk and Vermilion Streets. Concessions, including popcorn, soft drinks and water will be on site as will Viva La Waffle food truck.
