On the eve of the 2nd Saturday Artwalk, you should probably know that local photographer Debbie Fleming Caffery is a part of the Facing Change: Documenting America (FCDA) project. The FCDA "is a non-profit collective of dedicated photojournalists and writers coming together to explore America and to build a forum to chart its future."
Caffery's stunning work in the project is appropriately titled "Life and Death Along the Mississippi." Check it out here.
But back to art you can see up close and personally, Artwalk is set for Saturday, 6-9 p.m. all over downtown Lafayette with more than a dozen galleries, museums restaurants and shops offering live music, food, drink and art for purchase. Remember: all art original works are exempt from state sales tax that are sold in the Downtown Lafayette Cultural District.
Of all the cool things about Artwalk, one of the coolest is that chances are you know the artist whose work is on exhibit, and if you don't, chances are you'll have the opportunity to meet them.
"Personally, I think it is a great experience to see Lafayette's own hometown artists and artists that have come from every around the country and decided to make Lafayette their home and show their art around Lafayette," says Mallory Broussard, events and parks coordinator.
Broussard says art instructors at the UL Lafayette will show their work.
"We have several university professors from the art department who are showing their work," she says. "And actually, we have two or three seniors who have graduated from UL who are having their own expos as well."
This ArtWalk you'll find student work from New Iberia Catholic High, Cecilia High and St. Martinville High and poetry readings by students from St. Martinville High's Dead Poet's Society will be featured at the Arts Co-op.
The Lafayette Science Museum hosts a special exhibit, "Be A Bird Lover's Artwalk" as professor Garrie Landry, UL-Lafayette Biology instructor and curator, will share his collection of Passenger Pigeon artwork and artifacts.
"To the Water" at Lounge Gallery and Tsunami consists of paintings and photography by fourteen artists in the Summer Show at Lounge Gallery will take you on a beautiful journey "to the water...." from the sea shore to the basin to the bayou to the lake.
There's a history lesson at Gallery R featuring work from Virginia Fuselier Goetting titled, "The Police Gazette Monologues." The work consists of mixed media work that has been derived from a woodblock print originally featured in the National New York Police Gazette from the year 1893.
In addition to the expo and galleries, businesses in the district showing works for ArtWalk include Artmosphere, The Greenroom, The Ballet Academie, Bizarre Ink, Frederick's Hair Studio, Marc Isaac, Parish Ink, Recycled Cycles of Acadiana and Americas Coffee House.

Luba Zygarewicz, Thread, el hilo de mis dia
Luba Zygarewicz was born in Chile, in 1965, grew up in Bolivia, and moved to San Francisco at the age of 15. Zygarewicz says, "My work is in response to life situations and my daily struggle as a woman to be a wife, a mom, a teacher, and an artist." Thus, she gravitates to creating pieces that in time accumulate to a large whole, while daily working a bit a time with mundane materials readily accessible. Her new exhibition entitled Thread expresses a journey and an investigation of how to make visible that which invisibly passes by: time. Luba received her BA in Visual Arts from Loyola University, New Orleans in 1989 and her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1994.
