Beginning Sept. 1, you can pay an extra 10 bucks to extend your vehicle inspection to two years.
Gov. Bobby Jindal has signed into law Senate Bill 601 by Sen. Sherri Buffington, R-Shreveport, which allows vehicles to be inspected annually or once every two years.
The new law becomes effective Sept. 1.
The Times-Picayune reports that Buffington's bill keeps the fee for the inspection at $10 for each year the sticker is in effect - $10 for one year and $20 for two. Inspection stickers are currently $10 a year and must be renewed annually.
The T-P noted that some parishes or cities may tack on local fees to the base cost of the inspection permits.
The two-year sticker option is not available in areas that have pollution problems and have been cited by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The new law does not apply to commercial vehicles and "student transportation vehicles" such as school buses, the T-P notes. Those still must be inspected annually.
