Islamic school drops out of voucher program

by Walter Pierce

Breathe easy, folks: No Sharia ... for now. Amid the grousing of state lawmakers who love the idea of giving religious schools public tax dollars so long as the schools are Christian, an Islamic school in metro New Orleans has decided against accepting voucher students. We are surprised by this. Not.

The Islamic School of Greater New Orleans had been approved to accept 38 voucher students, but some lawmakers - smug alert: as this newspaper predicted - who were delighted to distribute Gomorrah's treasure among the children of Isaac were shocked, shocked we tell ya, to learn Ishmael's offspring might benefit as well.

According to the Associated Press:
Rep. Kenneth Havard, R-Jackson, objected to including the Islamic School of Greater New Orleans in a list of schools approved by the education department to accept as many as 38 voucher students. Havard said he wouldn't support any spending plan that "will fund Islamic teaching."

"I won't go back home and explain to my people that I supported this," he said.

"It'll be the Church of Scientology next year," said Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin.
