LPSB revisits budget

A special meeting of the Lafayette Parish School Board is set for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. to vote on a $409 million budget for the coming school year that was rejected last week. Superintendent Pat Cooper's proposed budget fell on a 5-4 vote - a margin that surprised some in the community since board member Tehmi Chassion, typically a reliable member of the so-called "Gang of Five" that was instrumental in hiring Cooper and has been supportive of his initiatives, defected and joined the majority opposing the budget.

As The Advocate reports, some members of the board are opposed to tapping the school system's rainy day fund as well as a $1.6 million plan to lower the student-teacher ratio in some classes below the level set for the district.
