The short answer is yes, but the city-parish president tells a Lafayette TV station he's willing to give the city of Broussard and its mayor, Charlie Langlinais, time to get their affairs in order.
Two weeks ago City-Parish President Joey Durel gave Broussard Mayor Charles Langlinais an ultimatum: drop a pair of lawsuits filed against Lafayette Consolidated Government - one seeking to block an LCG annexation in south Lafayette Parish, the other seeking to recoup $500,000 of an $825,000 LUS water bill LCG hit Broussard with following the discovery of a bypassed meter last year - and LCG and Broussard can live in harmony. In this case, harmony is the various services LCG provides to the smaller city: animal control services, rural fire protection and LUS water at a wholesale rate.
Langlinais countered last week with an offer of his own: put the LUS water bill before an arbitrator or simply refund Broussard $575,000. Impasse.
Now Durel tells KATC he's ready to pull the trigger on ending the relationship between LCG and Broussard, but he indicates he's willing to give Broussard a couple of years to build a water plant, although fire protection and animal control services could, in Durel's estimation, end within a month.
Broussard is on the long end of a 40-year contract with LUS for wholesale water. Durel insists Broussard breached that contract when an LUS water meter was bypassed, precipitating the $825,000 bill that is now in dispute. Killing the contract would, no doubt, lead to another lawsuit between LCG and Broussard.
