U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., the arch conservative GOP stalwart who has cleaved so closely to the party line that it left a crease across his forehead, has joined a growing gaggle of Louisiana politicians openly seeking to flex some Big Government muscles with utility company Entergy.
According to The Times-Picayune, Vitter is among a group of elected officials that has signed on to an effort - via a letter to Gov. Bobby "Creationism is Science" Jindal - to pass a constitutional amendment that would give state government "the power to force a utility to sell its assets if it fails to perform." The letter, obtained by the T-P, explains to Jindal that a utility company "would receive fair market value for its assets, just as it currently does when a municipality expropriates its assets. The process is already well established for municipalities; you would simply be extending it beyond the municipal level."
Entergy has been the source of complaints from elected officials lately who are reacting to constituents literally left in the dark and the heat following Hurricane Isaac, which knocked out power to more 700,000 customers, 172,000 of them in New Orleans.
