Acadiana Food Day set for Oct. 27

by Elizabeth Rose

Learn about growing your own food and eat a lot while you're at it. Michelle MacFadyen of Great Harvest Bread Co. is coordinating all efforts for the Acadiana Food Day on Oct. 27 at Heymann Memorial Park. The event is a celebration of real food with local farmers, artisans and restaurants, along with music, children's activities and presentations on how to grow your own food, find locally made products and produce and cook with them.

Gotreaux Family Farm, Mark and Mary's City Farm, Market Basket Youngsville and Homegrown Organics will all be there, selling their home-grown goodies; Cochon, Jolie's Louisiana Bistro, Great Harvest Bread Co., Café Cohen and The Lab Handcrafted Coffee and Comforts will be there selling their prepared goodies. Gonsoulin Land & Cattle Ranch will also be vending, as well as Primo's Peppers and TRAIL, which will be selling local beer.

The presentations include "What is REAL Food and How to Get It" from Gotreaux Family Farms, a cooking demonstration from Executive Chef Jeremy Conner from Village Café, "How to Grow Veggies in a 5-Gallon Bucket" from Earthshare Gardens (that comes with its own bucket!), a seed-planting workshop for kids and "Lions and Tigers and Ingredients, Oh My!" from Daphne Olivier of My Food Coach. The presentations will take place between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Acadiana Food Circle will be there to help connect growers and artisans with the community, and the LSU AgCenter will be there to educate attendees on nutrition and seafood. LSU AgCenter, along with the Children's Museum of Acadiana, will provide the children's activities. Legislative Action and Acadiana Dietetic and Nutrition Association will also be present.

However, the event is not restricted to the organizations listed - to participate or volunteer, call McFadyen at 236-8966.
