Yes, kids, we'll finally get to see and hear U.S. Reps. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, and Jeff Landry, R-New Iberia, bare fangs when they square off Monday on the UL Lafayette campus, and event organizer Dr. Robert Buckman, a journalism professor, is calling it a debate. Heretofore Landry and Boustany, who are going head to head in the Nov. 6 primary to represent the new 3rd Congressional District, have appeared together only at forums - a format that tends to engender civility and non-confrontation.
Monday's debate, at 2 p.m. in the Angelle Hall auditorium, is more in line with a traditional debate format: each candidate gets a three-minute opening statement and will have two minutes to responded to the panelists' questions with a 30-second rebuttal. The candidates will not know the questions in advance, so there will be some thinking on one's feet required.
Ryan Teten, a UL political science professor will moderate. The panel of journalists comprises Kristin Askelson, managing editor of The Daily Advertiser; Mike Mitchell, news director at KADN-Fox15; Darla Montgomery, evening anchor at KLFY-TV10; Jim Hummel, reporter for KATC-TV3; Walter Pierce, managing editor of IND Monthly; Ken Romero, co-host of "Mornings with Ken and Bernie" on KPEL-FM; and Jeff Zeringue, managing editor of The Daily Iberian.
