On Wednesday, Dec. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Lafayette Police will close I-10 east bound at North University Avenue to investigate a fatal accident that occurred at the site last week.

On Wednesday, Dec. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Lafayette Police will close I-10 east bound at North University Avenue to investigate a fatal accident that occurred at the site Dec. 18.

I-10 traffic will be diverted onto Ambassador Caffery to West Willow Street while the roadway remains closed.

Traffic investigators are shutting off the highway so engineers can safely take measurements regarding the fatal Dec. 18 crash that claimed the life of 66-year-old Shirley Johnson of San Antonio.

Police are asking drivers to avoid the area until the roadway is re-opened.

On Dec. 18 at approximately 4:10 p.m., Lafayette Police responded to a single vehicle crash on the eastbound lane of the I-10 overpass.  It was determined by investigators that that female driver of the vehicle experienced a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to crash. The driver and sole occupant, Johnson died later that evening at a local hospital from medical complications.

Two other crashes occurred after the initial incident. Only minor injuries resulted.
