The hope, Shelvin tells the daily newspaper, is to ultimately develop a comprehensive tax plan among the six municipalities, the sheriff's office and the school board.
The meeting comes as Lafayette Consolidated Government grapples with budget shortfalls and parish government in particular faces dire funding needs. Last month the council decided to table a resolution that would have called for a citywide tax referendum for the Parks & Recreation Department, which is subsidized by the city's general fund. City-Parish President Joey Durel last week called for the creation of a "blue ribbon commission" to study the revenue needs of LCG. S
chool Superintendent Pat Cooper has also been considering putting before voters a temporary sales tax to fund facility improvements. And in the backdrop is the possibility that state lawmakers will acquiesce to Gov. Bobby Jindal agree to hike the state sales tax in exchange for eliminating personal and corporate income taxes.
