Cajun musician - and city-parish councilman/medical supply sales rep - Kevin Naquin is hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. Appropriately called the Kevin Naquin for Pancreatic Research Golf Tournament, the event will commence at noon at on April 19 at the Wetlands Golf Course in north Lafayette. The deadline to register is April 1. (See below for registration details.)

For details on the tournament contact Jessie Naquin at (337) 288-5089 or [email protected]; Judy Briscoe at (337) 288-1888 or [email protected]; or Kevin Naquin at (337) 319-3817 or [email protected].

Settling on helping fund pancreatic cancer research wasn't an arbitrary decision for Naquin, as he points out in the mission statement for the tournament:

Creating a new golf tournament to support Pancreatic Cancer Research has, for me, been a labor of love.

In 2011, my father Jessie Naquin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and began the road to treatment, and hopefully recovery. Many of you may know my father, a 30-plus-year Farm Bureau agency manager who is now retired but still active in the local community. Over the past year he has taken numerous chemotherapy treatments and has been fortunate enough to be in the small percentage of pancreatic cancer patients for whom surgery is an option.

To date, my father's surgery appears to have been successful, and for that we are thankful. However, my family and I are very aware that many pancreatic cancer sufferers do not have good prognoses or outcomes. There remains a great need for research to find new treatments for this terrible disease. Unfortunately, most pancreatic cancers are discovered at a stage too late to provide effective treatment methods or good outcomes, and this must change.
