To help celebrate the release of his 20th record, Zachary Richard is being honored by both the Lafayette City-Parish Council and UL's Center for Louisiana Studies.
Zachary Richard's awesome "new" record, Le Fou, will be released stateside in April. (It's been out and generating stellar reviews in Canada since last fall and is available on iTunes.) And, to help celebrate the release of his 20th record, Richard is being honored by both the Lafayette City-Parish Council and UL's Center for Louisiana Studies.
On Tuesday, the council will vote on a resolution asking the state Department of Transportation and Development to rename a stretch of La. 93 running north from U.S. 90 to the parish line "The Zachary Richard Highway." Richard lives about a quarter mile off la. 93; his councilman, fellow Cajun musician Kevin Naquin, is sponsoring the resolution.
On Thursday, Richard will be honored at a reception at UL President Joe Savoie's home as the most recent recipient of the James William Rivers Prize for Louisiana Studies. Honored for his "longtime activism toward the advancement of the French language and Cajun Culture around the world," Richard joins a distinguished list of recipients that includes A. Hays Town, Barry Ancelet, Ernest Gaines, Elemore Morgan (Sr. and Jr.) and James Lee Burke.
