BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana taxpayers who require more time to file their 2012 income taxes must submit their extension requests electronically.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue implemented the requirement beginning with returns due in 2013. Filing extension requests must be submitted no later than the tax filing deadline.

2012 Louisiana Corporation Income and Franchise tax returns are due April 15, while 2012 Louisiana Individual Income tax returns are due May 15. Failure to file returns on time, or to submit an extension request by the filing deadline, will incur late-filing penalties.

A filing extension grants only additional time to file a return. It does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes due.

The department says paper requests will not be accepted.
