GRAND ISLE, La. (AP) - The 15th Grand Isle Migratory Bird Celebration takes place this weekend.
Activities Friday, Saturday and Sunday include watching state biologists catch and band songbirds and boat tours to the pelican rookery on nearby Queen Bess Island. The first two days also include kayak tours through the island's mangroves, walking tours of the Grand Isle Birding Trail and of the island's historical homes, and a free art show at the Grand Isle Library.
The event was created in part to help buy and protect undeveloped live oak ridges where migrating songbirds stop before and after flying across the Gulf of Mexico.
The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, the Louisiana Nature Conservancy, the Town of Grand Isle and The Grand Isle Community Development Team produce the event.
