Farmers' market comes to Horse Farm

by Elizabeth Rose

The city park will host farmers, artisans and musicians starting Saturday, June 1. Lafayette's Horse Farm will soon be home to a new farmers' market, which is anticipated to be one of the largest in town.

The first weekly farmers' market will be June 1 from 8 a.m. until noon, and the park will stay open until 2 p.m. If September's hugely successful Plant Fest at the Horse Farm, the park's first public event, is any indication, the new market will draw large crowds to the preserved green space on Johnston Street.

The market will host farmers and artisans, purveying seafood, produce and art, and Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel, who recently received his Master Gardener certification, hints that the event will be larger than any other market available in town. In addition, he hopes there will also be opportunities for French-speaking customers and vendors to interact in the language, as well as provide an opportunity for French immersion students to practice.

The farmers will pay a booth rental fee, and profits from those rentals will benefit the Horse Farm. Members of Lafayette Central Park Inc. will also be on site to hear public input about the park's development.
