LPSS Teachers of the Year announced

The 2012-2013 Teachers of the Year are Sarah Malagarie at SJ Montgomery Elementary, Heather Olson of Edgar Martin Middle and Rosey Kyle of Thibodaux STEM Academy.

Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper and his salty-tongued Tonto, Assistant Super Sandra Billeaudeau, surprised three Lafayette Parish public school teachers Tuesday in their respective classrooms with Teacher of the Year awards.

The 2012-2013 Teachers of the Year are Sarah Malagarie at SJ Montgomery Elementary, Heather Olson of Edgar Martin Middle and Rosey Kyle of Thibodaux STEM Academy.

The winners beat out finalists that included Amy Breaux (Northside High), Bonita St. Julien (Career Center), Nick Richert (Lafayette High), Cindy Tharpe (Comeaux High), Renella Henry (Alice Boucher Elem.), Marissa Miller (J. Wallace James Elem.), Kim Landry (Broadmoor), Tara Stoute Prejean (Duson), Ivy Wiltz (Acadian Middle), Andre' Deshotel (Judice Middle), Amy DesOrmeaux (Lafayette Middle) and Nicole Holden (Milton Middle).

According to a press release announcing the winners, Malagarie, Olson and Kyle exhibited the following qualities in earning their accolades:

*Inspire students of diverse backgrounds and abilities to learn.
*Have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues.
*Play an active and useful role in the community, as well as in the school.
*Be poised, articulate, and possess the energy and enthusiasm to withstand a taxing schedule.
*Exhibit knowledge of education policy.
*Be able to write knowledgeably, succinctly, and fervently about education.
*Be affiliated with professional education organizations
