NEW ORLEANS (AP) - U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan has awarded $1.2 million to programs to help the homeless in seven cities around Louisiana.
The money will continue work at 10 programs in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Mandeville, New Orleans, and Shreveport, according to a news release sent Thursday..
The Continuum of Care grants are awarded competitively to local projects to meet the needs of their homeless clients. The grants fund a wide variety of programs from street outreach and assessment to transitional and permanent housing.
The largest grant is $275,500 to the Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse of Northwest Louisiana. It's to be used for the Biedenharn Center for Women's Issues in Shreveport.
The smallest is nearly $37,700 to the Inner City Revitalization Corp. for Olive House in Alexandria.
UNITY of New Orleans received $477,200 in three grants: $245,200 for Armstrong Transitional Housing; $172,000 for Liberty House Transitional Housing and $60,070for the St. Vincent De Paul Community Pharmacy. All are in New Orleans.
The others are:
-$132,300 to Acadiana Outreach Center, Inc. for the Lighthouse Shelter for Women and Children in Lafayette.
-$69,200 to the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Housing Department in Lake Charles.
-$95,380 to the Archdiocese of New Orleans's Catholic Charities for Beyond Shelter in New Orleans.
-$63,723 to the Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless, for Scott Housing in Baton Rouge
-$82,292 to the Southeast Louisiana State hospital for supportive and permanent housing in Mandeville
"We know these modest investments in housing and services to our homeless neighbors not only saves money, but saves lives," said Donovan.
