Imagine Lafayette

by Walter Pierce

The third and final round of public forums on the Lafayette Comprehensive Plan is upon us. The third and final round of public forums on the Lafayette Comprehensive Plan will be held next week - Tuesday at the Rosa Parks Transportation Center downtown and Wednesday at the Heymann Performing Arts Center. These represent Lafayette residents' final opportunity to offer input on a plan for future growth that will impact the quality of life in the city and parish and affect future generations.

In previous forums, thousands of Lafayette residents turned out in person and online to indicate what their growth priorities are - data that has been crunched and analyzed by Wallace, Robert & Todd, the Philadelphia planning firm that inked a $1.2 million contract with the city of Lafayette to synthesize the overall vision of Lafayette residents into four scenarios. Attending the forums next week is your chance to vote for the scenario you believe is the best fit for Lafayette over the next couple of decades.

The plan will address such issues as traffic, drainage and infrastructure, as well as urban infill and how and where we grow. The plan will serve as a guide for policy, and hopefully allow Lafayette to grow efficiently and smartly over the coming years. This growth and how we go about it will likely have a huge impact on the economy of the future as Lafayette competes with cities in the region to attract and retain an educated workforce.

Those forums will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Rosa Parks Center and from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday at the Heymann Center.
