Shantel's at the Salmon

Hailing from the tiny northwest Kansas farming town of Atwood, singer-songwriter Shantel Leitner is a dynamo on a mission. She's in the midst of a 25-day tour of the West, southwest and southeastern U.S., hitting as many watering holes as possible, and that tour brings her to Lafayette's Wild Salmon Saloon on Saturday, May 11.

This Midwesterner may have been brought up on the fruited plain, but her voice has a bit of Detroit soul coloring its soprano hues. Shantel began singing at a young age, following country-singing forebears, but chose the path of the folkie instead, infusing her wistful, brooding music with enough soul diva to give it a distinctive, pleasing flair. And, she plays a pretty bad-ass cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams," too.
