Gov. Bobby Jindal has agreed that Louisiana's drivers should skip the Facebook and Twitter updates while on the road.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal has agreed that Louisiana's drivers should skip the Facebook and Twitter updates while on the road.

Jindal signed into law Thursday a bill that widens the law banning texting while driving, to also prohibit posting to social media sites while behind the wheel.

The new law takes effect Aug. 1.

Violators will face a traffic fine of up to $175 for the first offense and up to $500 for second and subsequent violations.

The bill by Livingston Republican Dale Erdey closes what he called a loophole by adding accessing, reading and posting to social media sites, such as the popular Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, to the prohibited-while-driving list.
