BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana House has rejected Senate changes to next year's budget.

The procedural action Tuesday sends the proposal to a legislative committee to work out a final deal on the $25 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Lawmakers say they hope to reach a compromise before the regular session must end Thursday and keep themselves out of a special session. Any compromise will be devised behind the scenes among legislative leaders.

Among the many points of contention, House Democrats are unhappy that dollars for the public school funding formula remain flat in the Senate budget, while dollars for the state's voucher program grow.

House Republicans disagree with the level of patchwork, one-time dollars that are slated to pay for continuing programs in the Senate budget.
