BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Parents will soon be able to try to get poor-performing schools in the Recovery School District returned to local control.
Gov. Bobby Jindal signed the "parent trigger" bill into law Monday.
The measure by Baton Rouge Rep. Ted James lets parents petition the state-run RSD to return a school to local control if that school has earned a "D'' or "F'" grade from the state for five consecutive years.
To be valid, such a petition will require signatures from parents of a majority of a school's students who have been attending the school for at least two years.
The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has to devise regulations for the return process by Oct. 1 under the bill.
