Jindal signs bill allowing donations of fish, game

There shouldn't be any hang-ups if hunters and fishermen want to donate their catch to nonprofits that feed the hungry.

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - There shouldn't be any hang-ups if hunters and fishermen want to donate their catch to nonprofits that feed the hungry.

Gov. Bobby Jindal on Tuesday signed a bill by Keithville Sen. Sherri Buffington that allows for the donations. The legislation came after state health inspectors destroyed 1,600 pounds of deer meat donated by hunters to a homeless shelter in northwest Louisiana.

Jindal signed the bill in Shreveport, with representatives from the shelter and Hunters for the Hungry, a national organization seeking to encourage hunters to donate their game.

The governor also signed a second measure that allows hunters and anglers to donate money to Hunters for the Hungry through a check-off box on applications for hunting and fishing licenses.
