Dem leader pushing for veto session

by Walter Pierce

If held, it would be the first veto override session in more than four decades. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's House Democrats are urging their colleagues to return to the Capitol for a veto session, to consider overriding Gov. Bobby Jindal's budget cuts.

Rep. John Bel Edwards, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued a statement Thursday saying the governor's line-item vetoes should be reversed.

Jindal's vetoes struck $6 million that would have paid for developmentally disabled services. The governor said the state couldn't afford the spending because lawmakers hadn't included enough money for projected increases in the use of existing Medicaid services.

A veto session was automatically set for July 16 when Jindal issued vetoes, but a majority written vote of either the House or Senate can scrap the session. Lawmakers have never held a veto session since the current state constitution was enacted four decades ago.
