CPC to consider Redflex contract change

by Walter Pierce

The change to the contract with Redflex comes as an amnesty period for motorists with unpaid citations winds down and the city ramps up collections of fines/late fees exceeding $125 by contracting with outside attorneys to bring the violators to court.

The Lafayette City-Parish Council on Tuesday night will vote on an ordinance for final adoption that would adjust the contract between Lafayette Consolidated Government and the vendor that administers the SafeLight/SafeSpeed program in the city limits.

The change to the contract with Redflex comes as an amnesty period for motorists with unpaid citations winds down and the city ramps up collections of fines/late fees exceeding $125 by contracting with outside attorneys to bring the violators to court. The current contract with Redflex calls for the city to receive 60 percent of revenues generated via the traffic camera program and Redflex to get 40 percent. That contract, if the ordinance amending it is approved, will require Redflex to shoulder a commensurate 40 percent of the cost of contracting with outside attorneys to collect those outstanding fines.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the council auditorium at City Hall. To read the ordinance, click here. http://www.lafayettela.gov/OBCouncil/ViewDocument.aspx?docID=595197
