METAIRIE, La. (AP) - The Saints' top wide receiver returned to the practice field Monday, and New Orleans also signed a pair of receivers to bolster an injury-riddled group.
While Marques Colston returned from the physically unable to perform list, the Saints signed six-year NFL veteran Steve Breaston and re-signed rookie free agent Brent Leonard.
Colston missed the first 10 days of training camp with a foot injury. He said that Monday's practice had been a target date for a return to the field.
"It's about time I started camp," said Colston, whose 58 career touchdowns are a franchise record. "These guys have been out here working for (10 days). They're really in football shape."
Breaston, who was signed after a workout with New Orleans earlier Monday, has 255 career receptions with Arizona and Kansas City. He was released by the Chiefs in February.
"I'm grateful they gave me the opportunity," Breaston said. "I've just got to go out here, learn the playbook and keep working hard."
Saints coach Sean Payton said the team worked out "a few" receivers.
"Breaston's a guy who . can run and has got a lot of snaps in this league," Payton said. "His workout went well. We'll see how he does."
Leonard, who played collegiately at Louisiana-Monroe, returned to the Saints roster six days after being waived.
The moves come after Joseph Morgan, one of the favorites for the No. 3 receiver spot behind Colston and Lance Moore, injured his left knee on the first possession of Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage.
"We're waiting on Joe," Payton said. "He's getting a second opinion right now on his knee."
Another receiver, Andy Tanner, was held out of Monday's practice after injuring his shoulder on Saturday.
The Saints waived kicker Jose Maltos and injured wide receiver Chris Givens to make room for Breaston and Leonard.
Colston was one of two players activated from the PUP list on Monday. Cornerback Patrick Robinson, who had offseason arthroscopic knee surgery, practiced for the first time. Only linebacker Victor Butler, who injured his knee in an offseason team workout in June, remains on the Saints' PUP list.
Neither Colston nor Robinson saw action in team periods, Payton said, but both got extensive work in individual drills.
