United Way of Acadiana collecting school supplies

by Kari Walker

'Stuff the Bus' school supply drive collection sites set for Aug. 8 in Lafayette Parish.

It's the time of year when parents start to fill their shopping carts with pencils, crayons and glue sticks galore, but for some children in Acadiana school will start with empty backpacks. United Way of Acadiana aims to change that.

Items needed for UWA's supply drive

The organization is collecting school supplies to give children of low-income families in Lafayette Parish the tools they need to move to the head of the class this year through its Stuff the Bus school supply drive.

Basic supply items are needed, such as pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, and scissors but additional items like paper towels, hand sanitizer and facial tissue are also being collected.

UWA is appreciative of anything you have to give, but requests new items only.

On Thursday, Aug. 8, collection sites will be set up around Lafayette Parish from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Donation sites include:

United Way of Acadiana
215 E. Pinhook Road

Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital
1101 Kaliste Saloom Road

Lafayette Parish School Board
113 Chaplin Drive
**
IberiaBank**
200 W. Congress St.

Additional information can be found on the UWA website, including a list of needed items and how to sign up and volunteer to un-stuff the bus and get items organized to distribute to recipients.

If you can't make it to one of the drop off sites on Aug. 8, contact UWA asap, as the drive ends Aug 9.
