Celebrate the Hottest Night of the Year in Parc Sans Souci

by Kari Walker

Can't take the heat? Get into the fountains.

It's hot outside - need we say more? While most of us are pining for days of crisp, cooler air about now, the folks at Downtown Development Authority have come up with a way to embrace the heat by throwing a bash known as the Hottest Night of the Year. Think of it as the Cajun version of the Polar Bear Plunge.

On Friday, Aug. 23 from 7-10 p.m., the community is invited to this summer shindig in Parc Sans Souci - the park is known for its dancing water fountain splash pad, but DDA is taking it up a notch with the addition of water slides, musical entertainment by DJ Digital and One Trick Pony, and more.

You'll want to see the homemade pick up truck pools made by local businesses and individuals competing for who has the best invention and use of creativity- you might even get to take a dip in one of the pools. Heath Morton from the KLFY weather team will be on deck in a dunking booth. "If he said it would be sunny and it rained on your baseball game, step up to dunk him," says Kate Durio with DDA.

Food and beverage will be available for purchase from food trucks Viva La Waffle, Pelon's Mexican Hot Dogs, and Freetown Fries. Party goers can purchase tickets for non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages - including several daiquiri flavors perfect for this downtown oasis.

DDA is ready to reveal its Downtown Lafayette t-shirts available for purchase, so bring some extra cash for threads to represent the Hub City wherever you go. Another DDA reveal will happen tonight - our lips are sealed, but we can say if you're a fan of Tropical Isle in New Orleans, come thirsty mom and dad.

Pack up the wagons with beach towels but leave the ice chests, glass containers, and pets at home -it's going to be a cool night for the entire family.
