'Tis the Season(s)

The Sterling Automotive Broadway Series, the Acadiana Center for the Arts and the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana are gearing up for new seasons that feature musicians, musicals and dance performances that run the gamut from jazz and country to classical and pop.
PASA recently merged with the AcA, although the former maintains its mission through its Main Stage series at the Heymann Center to bring The Big to the stage. Performances for the three presenters will be held at both the AcA's Moncus Theater and the Heymann Center beginning Sept. 26 with an intimate concert by country crooner Clint Black at the AcA.

Here's what's going down through 2014:

AcA AllStar Series

AllStar Series tickets for all six performances range from $310-$460 or AcA members and $340-$485 for the general public. Individual tickets vary. Tickets can be obtained at the AcA box office by calling 233-7060 or online at AcadianaCenterForTheArts.org.

Thursday, Sept. 26
Clint Black

The country legend will host an intimate performance in the Moncus Theater with an acoustic trio. Guests are asked to attend in either country or black tie attire. Local country singer Jaryd Lane opens.

Saturday, Oct. 12
The Robert Cray Band

Cray has been one of the most consistently accomplished contemporary blues guitarists, having recently performed with Peter Frampton's Guitar Circus and at Eric Clapton's Crossroads festival. The five-time Grammy winner will celebrate the release of a new record with the AcA audience.

Saturday, Nov. 2
An Evening with Pikelny, Sutton, Bulla, Bales & Cobb

This concert is having the cake and eating it, too. The names may not exactly ring a bell, but the musicians, hailed as the premier acoustic instrumentalists and singers in contemporary bluegrass music, perform in some heavyweight outfits: Punch Brothers, Infamous Stringdusters, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Hot Rize and The Lyle Lovett Band.

Christmas with Aaron Neville

Need we say more? The warble. The mole. The surname. The holiday classics.

The Mavericks

Blending country, rock and Latin styles, these pioneers of the Americana genre have rolled up Grammy and CMA awards under the inspiring leadership of Cuban-born vocalist Raul Malo.

An Evening with Rosanne Cash

James Brown: Get on the Good Foot, A Celebration of Dance**
In October 2013, a team of choreographers from around the world, 15 dancers, lighting and production designers and music professionals will arrive in Lafayette to launch James Brown: Get on the Good Foot, A Celebration in Dance. This evening-long dance performance will showcase the stylistic and cultural influence of James Brown, "Godfather of Soul." The Apollo Theater is partnering with Lafayette to launch the project, which will include workshops and other activities. A national tour is being planned following the premiere at the Apollo.

Wednesday, Nov. 13
Sweet Plantain

Artfully fusing the western classical traditions in which they were trained and the hip-hop, jazz improv and Latin rhythms on which they were raised, their original writing and live shows educate and entertain. Separately hailing from the Bronx, New Jersey and Venezuela, together these musicians give voice to a sound that is contemporary, multicultural and very New York.

Danú**
Hailing from historic County Waterford, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today. Its standing-room-only concerts through Ireland are true events featuring high-energy performances and glorious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire. This December, Danú will give Lafayette the spirit of the Irish Christmas.

The Broadway Boys

The Broadway Boys is a collection of the hottest male voices currently working on the New York stage. Through their dynamic vocal prowess and redefining arrangements, the Boys add elements of pop, funk, gospel, jazz and fold to show tunes and classic pop songs. Performing in groups of six, the Boys are able to explore harmonies rarely presented by Broadway singers.

Pat Metheny Unity Group

"The Unity Band record and tour was such a life-changing experience for me that I didn't want to see it come to an end," says Pat Metheny. "With this project, I want to form a platform that encompasses the entire range of things that I have done over the years." Twenty-time Grammy Award-winning jazz guitarist and composer Metheny incorporates elements of post-bop, jazz-fusion, Latin jazz and progressive/contemporary jazz. His career in music spans nearly four decades and demonstrates his incredible talent for shifting between and blending musical genres.

Mamma Mia

Set to the bouncy, disco hits of Swedish pop quartet ABBA, Catherine Johnson's tale of a mother, a daughter, three possible fathers and a Greek island has been applauded by more than 45 million audience members since its 1999 debut in London. A popular motion picture based on the musical swept cinemas in 2008 starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.

Cirque Dreams Holidaze

Director Neil Goldberg re-imagines his Broadway hit Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy for the holidays, bringing a cast of acrobats and actors into a high-flying celebration with larger-than-life characters and breathtaking feats from the European cirque tradition.

Sunday, Dec. 1
Memphis

Winner of four Tony Awards including Best Musical, Memphis is loosely based on the life of Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, whose enthusiasm for (and willingness to broadcast) black popular music in the early 1950s paved the way for pioneer rock 'n' rollers like Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. The original Broadway production debuted in 2009 and was almost unanimously praised for its catchy tunes and engaging story.
