BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A group of Louisiana education leaders, lawmakers and others are looking at ways to tweak Louisiana's multibillion-dollar public school funding formula.
A new task force, created by the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, opens its discussions Wednesday, with hearings from public school officials and anyone else who wants to weigh in on their problems or concerns with the $3.5 billion spending plan.
The funding formula, known as the Minimum Foundation Program or MFP, divvies up state dollars to Louisiana's 70 public school districts, based on the number and type of students they have and the individual districts' wealth.
Superintendent of Education John White and BESE have sought changes to the payments for special education and gifted students. Lawmakers rejected those changes and said they wanted more study.
