The Backyard Series returns for its September installment at Vermillionville with this month installment covering Louisiana Basketry Traditions.
For its September edition, the Backyard Series will explore one of the most discernable traditions of Louisiana's various Native American tribal populations: its baskets. This month's workshop will outline how these baskets embody each individual tribe's history, spirituality and view of the world.
The workshop also covers the modest tools, weaving techniques and the variety of materials-including pine needles, palmetto fronds and river cane-used to meticulously weave such baskets. The workshop will also welcome various members of the Chitimacha, Coushatta and Houma nations to learn about their techniques, the importance of this tribal knowledge and what is being done to preserve it for future generations.
The Backyard Series begins at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Vermillionville, located at 300 Fisher Road. Admission to the series is free and open to the public. For more information visit Vermilionville.org or call 337-482-1320.
