Even organizers have added a sacred aspect to this year's shindig: a blessing of the boudin by the Rev. Bryce Sibley of Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church on the UL Lafayette campus. "This is a meaningful custom as well as a way to keep the event tied to the traditions and culture of South Louisiana," says organizer Dawn Carriker. "A blessing of the boudin has never been done before and we're excited to be kicking things off this way."

So here's what's going down: 18 teams will compete in four boudin categories: traditional, specialty, unlinked and people's choice. The cook-off promises tons of boudin for the sampling from the nether reaches of the boudin universe - places like Hammond, Lake Charles and Cottonport, not to mention from right here in the heart of Acadiana. And it wouldn't be a South Louisiana food celebration without music; Sons of Voodoo, the Specklers and the Babineaux Sisters will perform in the Parc Sans Souci band stand. Did we mention face painting and other activities for the kids? Yes, we just did.

Proceeds from the Boudin Cook-Off benefit the Historic Preservation Alliance of Lafayette. What's not to love?
