A Republican state lawmaker who had talked about entering Louisiana's U.S. Senate race has decided against a campaign.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Republican state lawmaker who had talked about entering Louisiana's U.S. Senate race has decided against a campaign.
State Rep. Alan Seabaugh, of Shreveport, has instead endorsed Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy in the 2014 election against Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu.
Seabaugh's decision, announced late Sunday, is one step in helping Cassidy keep the race clear of a crowded field of Republican contenders.
But other GOP state lawmakers still are eyeing the Senate race, and Cassidy faces opposition from tea party contender Rob Maness.
Seabaugh issued a statement saying he decided not to run because Cassidy proved to be a strong conservative by voting against reopening the government and raising the debt ceiling.
The Shreveport lawmaker urged other Republicans to unite behind Cassidy and work together to oust Landrieu from office.
