Vermilionville finds itself hosting yet another edition of its free cultural movie screenings with the Les Vues Film Series. This month features a screening of Jem Cohen's film Instrument, and currated by Lance Harris.
Instrumnent is collaboration between filmmaker Jem Cohen and the Washington, D.C., band Fugazi, covering the 10 year period of 1987-1996. Far from a traditional documentary, this film is considered a musical document; a portrait of musicians at work. The project mixes sync-sound, 16mm. Fugazi played their first show on September 3, 1987 and since then they have released seven albums and toured the world extensively covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between.
Though the band has been on indefinite hiatus since 2003, the members continue to work together on the Fugazi Live Series archive project, which officially launched on December 1, 2011. More than 800 of Fugazi's shows were recorded by the band's sound engineers and, over time, each of these recordings will be made available to download for a small fee and will be presented beside available photos, flyers and general show info.
Les Vues as always is free and open to the public, but a suggested $5 donation will go towards screening and curating costs. Instrument will screen on Monday, Nov. 25, at 6:30 p.m., at Vermilionville, located at 300 Fisher Road. For more information, call (337) 233-4077 or visit Vermilionville.org.
