NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A public Mass will be held Thursday in New Orleans for artist George Rodrigue, who died Saturday of cancer at age 69.

Archbishop Gregory Aymond will officiate at the service scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans' French Quarter. A graveside service and burial will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Cemetery in New Iberia.

Rodrigue, a native of New Iberia, began painting scenes of life in Cajun country in the 1960s, but is perhaps best known for the "Blue Dog" that became his signature creation in the 1990s.

In lieu of flowers, the family in a statement Monday said memorial donations may be mailed to the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts in New Orleans or online via www.RodrigueFoundation.org.
