Stung by Slate
The Yellow Jacket - an accessory developed out of Baton Rouge that turns the iPhone into a stun gun - was previewed by our sister pub ABiz last year (read that story here) and has since caught the attention of Slate.com. In the story, titled "iPhone Cases Are Getting Creepy and Kind of Absurd," Slate's tech blogger Lily Hay Newman writes that the Yellow Jacket is "the next best thing to a completely integrated stun gun," and with the device being offered in a family pack of three or more, she concludes with a hint of sarcasm that it's "A safety-oriented and appropriate gift for the whole family. Yup."
Online threats force OPD's hand
A massive crackdown over the weekend by the Opelousas Police Department's Crime Suppression Team resulted in 45 interviews, the issuance of 10 court summonses, six arrests and the seizure of three firearms, according to this story from KATC TV 3. The crackdown was prompted by a recent shooting death, the arrest of one suspect and social media threats of retaliation by the suspect's family members, the story notes. According to police, revenge plots are still being discussed on social media, and will result in more arrests if the activity isn't stopped.
Animal shelter under fire
Animal rights activists, according to this story from the Opelousas Daily World, are pushing for sweeping changes at the St. Landry Parish Animal Shelter, where animals are alleged to be living in conditions of squalor. In addition to over-crowding, the animals, the story notes, are forced to live in cages with urine and feces accumulating for several days before being cleaned.
