EAT.PLAY.LOVE: The intentions of 2014

by Kari Walker

Resolving to resolve nothing

I didn't make a resolution this year. I did however make a few "intentions" - you know, those things we plan to do but if we don't do them we won't feel so bad about it because we didn't "break a resolution" and cheat ourself. Although, I'm pretty sure many of you broke resolutions during that last stressful Saints game by eating half a king cake and a poppin' a few tops. Hey, there was a chance at victory and deciding to YOLO seemed like a good idea. I digress.

Speaking of YOLO, I know it's so Drake circa 2011, but it still holds true - you only live once.

Call me a hipster trying to hold on to my 20s, but the motto has become part of my intentions of 2014. We aren't getting any younger and there will never be more hours in the day, so you better make the most of each. How's that for some fortune cookie wisdom?

I do think in order to achieve some of my intentions, I am going to need to figure out a way to add more hours to a day. I NEED to get it all done and right now I'm still looking at boxes I never unpacked when we moved last May. However, these said boxes are not on my list of intentions. So, what's at the top of my list? Well, after some professional goals, it's pretty simple: mastering the balancing act.

Say what? What does that even mean? I actually don't really know.

It's something to do with career, family and self, but mostly it starts with self. I intend to do more yoga and buy a juicer but I also need to figure out a way to finally get organized. I once was really into color coded file folders - this was also when I owned a Motorola Razor and there was no such thing as an app. Life has become less paper and more digital and I've got to figure out how to click once and accomplish what I started instead of this scenario:

Checks email. Needs to find that article once read online about topic X. Didn't save it to favorites. Oh, but it was on so-and-so's Facebook. Logs into Facebook. Oh look, a video of a cat playing a piano. So cute. What?! She's pregnant?! OMG. Uh oh, what did Justin Bieber do now. Wait, I don't really care. What was I looking for in the first place? Sigh.

Can you relate? It's a vicious cycle, but a necessary evil to me for business and staying connected with current trends. I simply need to figure out when to stop from clicking on one more Buzzfeed post and instead read something that could help my daily life.

So, once I master the digital overload I'll work on learning to like doing laundry which is also to include folding AND putting the clothes away - the coffee table is not a proper receptacle to store clothes. Maybe then I'll have time for that hot yoga class and a juice cleanse.

He doesn't play the piano, but Grumpy Cat is

my favorite digital distraction
