IN THE KITCHEN: DIY King Cakes

by Kari Walker

Mardi Gras cooking fun for kids

Mardi Gras is a week from today and soon the kids will be on a break from school looking for fun adventures around the house. Try out this recipe with your curious cooks and let them learn more about the Carnival season. King cakes are the perfect treat for sharing with friends and these mini-cakes can be great to bring along to parade route parties or enjoyed as a Mardi Gras morning breakfast treat.

All you will need for this simple recipe is a can of refrigerated cinnamon rolls, food coloring and sugar.

Turn baking this sweet treat into a learning experience by letting kids gather measuring spoons and materials required to bake. You might also ask your children if they know why purple, green and gold are the signature colors of Mardi Gras - here's a hint in case you forgot: purple stands for justice, green for faith and gold for power. Read more here for fun kid-friendly stories of the history of Mardi Gras.

1 can cinnamon rolls with icing
2 T gold colored sugar
2 T purple colored sugar

Have an adult* preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a baking sheet with butter or cooking spray. Separate dough into cinnamon rolls and unroll each roll into a dough rope by folding the unrolled rope in half lengthwise. Twist dough in a spiral and then into a circle. Place on baking sheet and repeat with remaining rolls, placing each at least two inches apart. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
