Feel the spectrum
The Oscar red carpet was a good one last night. I mean good good. Perhaps it was the variety of vibes from glittering pale lace to sleek black, petal pink to rich navy. Perhaps it was man after man that did far more than don the traditional black tux (take note, Lafayette, we wanna see some color in your tux next carnival season). Maybe it was the powerful performances and the fantastic job Ellen did as host. This was a red carpet this IND Styler loved. So, let's start at the top.
Kate Hudson is my top pick. She has long embodied what I find is an unparalleled combination of boho and chic. A sophisticated looked that carries with it a bit of eclectic heart. She killed it (murdered it without mercy) in a silky pale Versace. The hair, the makeup. That plunging neckline that was more graceful than it could ever be tawdry. We could go on and on. That bit on the back that was nearly a mini-cape. Just how you do the red carpet.
Lupita Nyong'O had her Cinderella moment on that Oscar carpet and she is certainly a top three. The Yale grad that caught our eye (and this style-loving heart) with a red, caped-decked dress early in awards season was perfection in a pale blue Prada gown. Proof that all that hair and makeup isn't always so necessary. She did simple. It worked.
And then there was the gal this IND Styler was watching most enthusiastically - the never-boring Jennifer Lawrence. Red, clearly, is this girl's color (remember that red Calvin Klein a few years ago?). She killed in a simple Dior Couture and for the first time since she chopped those locks I was digging her short 'do.
There were so many fantastically dressed it was hard to narrow them down. I picked eight but there were others that were worthy like Charlize Theron. Has she ever done it wrong? (We're pretending she never wore that rose-on-the-breast-Dior disaster.) There was beauty in black Emma Watson and Jessica Biel in a shimmering gorgeous Chanel.
The men were the real wild card. They've been upping the game this award season with richly-hued jackets and last night several pulled off the Casablanca jacket from Matthew McConaughay (his wife was at the top of our best dressed list as well) to our never-ceasing crush Jared Leto.
The awards were that perfect blend of humor and recognition of the poignant. Maybe it's this IND Styler's love of Louisiana but I sure loved the nod to gumbo from McConaughay and who wasn't cheering and a little misty-eyed when Leto honored his struggling single mom out of Bossier City? In fact, it was a night to bring mom for some of the hottest guys on the red carpet and what's hotter than a guy that loves his mom?
