Interim VP of research named VP of research

Dr. Ramesh Kolluru has been named vice president of research at UL Lafayette, pending approval by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System.

Kolluru's association with the university began 21 years ago as a graduate student in computer science. He became a research scientist, and then director of three nationally recognized research centers before being appointed interim vice president in August 2012.

Kolluru has collaborated with others to develop a master plan for research at the university. It focuses on five disciplines aligned with the UL's strengths and the state's economic development and higher education goals.

By working with faculty and research staff, he has generated more than $42 million in external research and development funds that have financially supported 172 graduate and undergraduate students through assistantships, the university said in announcing his new position. Those funds have also supported summer salaries for 23 faculty members in 16 disciplines.

Kolluru is an associate professor in the university's School of Computing and Informatics and has taught at undergraduate and graduate levels since 1998.
