Native and edgy and boho arrives
Kallen Forster's got some soul. It was something I knew when I saw her collection. I had zero background for the designer that was a breath of eclectically fresh air. But, I sensed there was something more to the nearly-tribal vibe she showed.
There were flaming hearts, bits of leather, structured pieces paired with flowing beauties and beautifully braided models with smatterings of gleaming gold on their faces. It was just a delicious combination of edge and boho and well, soulful, design.
Turns out I was right (just ask my husband, it happens all the time). When I did a bit of research on the gal behind the threads I found she is an LSU grad who created theDesign Lab - a place for local women in low income communities to enhance the quality of life for themselves and their families through fashion.
"theDesignLab employs and empowers local women through education and opportunity to have a career path through fashion and become a beacon of growth and change in for themselves, their families, and their communities" is the mission.
Forster's aim is that the lab would train, empower and employ local women in design techniques that will provide a sustainable and healthy lifestyle. She also believes in socially responsible design methods and has moved toward the preservation of historic textiles through modern design applications. See? Deep, soulful stuff here.
Her collection certainly moved this INDStyler. Whether it was a slouchy pair of pale blush and nude pants in a cool print or a nearly-mod little leather dress with rocking super knee-high gladiators, Forster's collection was one for the books.
