BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A New Orleans lawmaker's efforts to place new limits on red light cameras and automated speed enforcement systems used to issue traffic tickets hit roadblocks in the House.
Both of Rep. Jeff Arnold's bills Tuesday fell short of the 53 votes needed for passage, against opposition from mayors and police chiefs.
His first proposal, which received a 49-40 vote, would have required local voter approval for towns and cities to continue issuing tickets from red light or speed cameras in 2015.
His second bill, which received a 48-43 vote, would have lengthened the caution light used at intersections that have red light cameras, to give people more time to move through a yellow light before it turns red.
