Mes amis, Party Girl's still recovering from her awesome Festival experience (did y'all see The Skatalites' closing show at sundown Sunday?), but the parties keep on going. Many thanks to Janice LeBlanc for inviting me to Phi Mu's Fiftieth Birthday Dessert Social, where the signature color for decorations was pink! From carnations to candles to petit fours and attire, Party Girl's favorite hue was in full force. "It was definitely a day for thinking pink as 125 members of Phi Mu sorority from Acadiana and beyond turned out to celebrate," says LeBlanc. National Ritual Chairman Peggy Tuttle King was the featured speaker and awarded Dr. Ethel Stackhouse Smith with her Phi Mu 50-Year Pin. Eighteen legacies, ranging in age from 3-18, also received special jeweled gifts, and retired UL Dean of Women Mary Olive McPhaul was honored as special guest. UL's Phi Mu and alumni chapters were founded in 1956, and the original Phi Mu, named Phi Delta Epsilon, was founded in 1917, back when UL was SLI. Kudos to all those girls for staying in touch and continuing to celebrate their sisterhood!
Speaking of sisterhood, the Junior League of Lafayette participated April 22 in the national Kids in the Kitchen initiative. The girls headed to Albertsons on Johnston Street for kid-friendly nutrition lessons, food preparation and grocery store tours, all to teach kids the benefits of healthy eating. "It was a great event for children and adults to tour the store with a nutritionist from Women's and Children's and to learn about the new food pyramid, portion sizes and much more," says JLL member Heather A. Escott. The Association of Junior Leagues International has also launched a virtual recipe collection of nutritious recipes and tips. Check it out at www.kidsinthekitchen.ajli.org.
And on the fashion front, Coldwater Creek's Fashion for the Cure event in March featured after-hours wardrobe-building tips to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Ten percent of the night's sales went to the local Komen affiliate, and Coldwater Creek also carries a line of Komen clothing, the "In Pink Collection." The local Komen girls are gearing up for their annual Dragon Boat Race for the Cure on the Cajun Invasion in Ontario, Canada, in July. "We say it awakens the dragon from within us to live the most incredible life ever after the diagnosis of breast cancer," says Coldwater Creek's Neppie Landry. The girls christened their boat last Saturday at Hub City Ford by pouring champagne over the dragon's head. That's Party Girl's kind of team ' good luck, Neppie and crew!
